It wasn’t fancy. It was a rodeo. Loud and dirty, with people spilling everywhere. To her surprise, there were as many women as men. Fitted shirts and tight jeans tapered into cowboy boots of assorted colors. Rose felt out of place in her stilettos, wishing she’d pulled on the trainers she’d worn on the jet.

She stood out, and she didn’t like it.

Oddly, Nick looked comfortable. He held a Molson and drank from the can.

Giant floodlights lit the outdoor pens, and Nick disappeared in a throng of cowboys, leaving her and Alix sitting on the first row of a metal bleacher.

“I won’t be long,” he promised.

Alix’s eyes were as wide as her own, and she sipped at a Coke, elbows on her knees as she took in her surroundings.

Nick was talking to the cowboy beside the bullpen, clapping him on the back, then turning toward them as the cowboy climbed into the staging pen.

The bronco rushed from the shoot with a ferocity Rose had not expected. Nick, now seated next to her, pushed forward on the bench, knuckles white.

“Something eating you, cowboy?” Before she could stop herself, she put a hand over his.

He stiffened at her touch, then relaxed. “It’s my brother.” He nodded toward the cowboy in the run.

The run opened and, twelve seconds later, Jackson Hartmann won the buckle.
